Cooking with Essential oils

The wonderful world of essential oils is absolutely fascinating!  Not only can they enhance your cuisine, they can enhance your health as well….find out more below! 

What are Essential Oils?
Essential oils are potent, concentrated essences that naturally occur in plants, giving them their characteristic odours, flavours, or other such properties. They are extracted from various parts of the plant (seeds, flowers, bark, root or leaves).

They have a chemical structure that is similar to human cells and tissues, which makes them compatible with human protein and enables them to be readily identified and accepted by the body.

Essential oils have been used throughout history in many cultures, for medicine, in food and for beauty purposes. Modern scientific study and trends towards more holistic approaches to wellness are driving a revival and new discovery of essential oil health applications for a wide range of emotional and physical wellness applications.

Essential Oils – Quality Matters!
Unfortunately, it is common to see highly adulterated essential oils, replete with “100% pure” on the label, competing with each other on the health store shelves (and the internet), often at a very low price.  These oils are frequently adulterated with synthetic chemicals, pesticide residues or parts of the plant that have no therapeutic benefit.

So, how do you know what is safe in an unregulated industry?

doTERRA CPTG® essential oils?
dōTERRA’s CPTG® essential oils are 100% pure and natural, representing the safest and most beneficial essential oils available today.  They are carefully extracted from plants grown in their natural environment:  which means they retain their true plant essences & complete chemical constituents. They do not contain fillers or artificial ingredients that would dilute their active qualities and every single batch is subjected to rigorous testing to ensure extract composition and activity and far exceed current industry standards.

Using dōTERRA’s CPTG® Essential Oils in Cooking
You can ingest about 75% of doTERRA’s CPTG® essential oils as they are safe to be used internally.  They can also be used in food and beverages to enhance flavour and support health.

The easiest way to begin cooking with the oils, is to substitute the essential oils in recipes that call for dried herbs, spices or fruit juices.  Simply replace these ingredients with the companion essential oil.

The most important thing to remember is that these oils are undiluted and therefore extremely potent – far more potent than any other ingredient or essential oils you’ve ever used in the kitchen before.  They are typically 50-70 times stronger than the herb or plant they are derived of.  To give more of an idea, one” drop of peppermint oil equals about 28 cups of peppermint tea. Therefore, 1/2 a drop or one drop of oil may be enough to adequately flavor a big pot or bowl of a favorite recipe

Why not just use herbs?
As much as I love my herbs, I really love essential oils.  Unlike dried herbs, which typically lose up to 90% of their healing nutrients and oxygen molecules when dried, these oils are available and safe for cooking and home use.  They are convenient and readily available and they seem to add a whole new dimension to recipes, rounding out and intensifying the flavour of many dishes.

So why not use essential oils in your cooking to enhance your own and your family’s vigour and strength!

Essential Oil Cooking Tips:

  • Only ever use CPTG® grade oils in food, that are clearly marked on the bottle as a being a dietary supplement. Not all essential oils are created equal and most on the market are simply not safe to take internally.
  • Always, start off using a single drop so as to not waste the essential oil, another drop can always be added if needed.
  • When a recipe calls for less than a teaspoon of an herb or spice, dip a toothpick in the center of the dripper cap and then swirl the toothpick in the recipe or beverage.
  • Always use the “Toothpick Method” for cinnamon bark oil, clove oil, ginger oil and oregano oil because the doTERRA oils are much stronger that their companion spices.
  • When using a dōTERRA essential oil in place of the zest of “one” lemon, orange or tangerine –8 to 14 drops of its companion essential oil can be substituted.
  • One tablespoon dried spice/spicy herb is equivalent to 1/2 to ‘one’ drop of doTERRA essential oil. Hot or spicy herbs are: marjoram, oregano, sage, rosemary, thyme, or coriander.
  • Add the essential oil right before serving, essential oils are heat sensitive so minimise exposure to heat.
  • Store in a cool environment.

Keep out of reach of children. Although these oils are natural they are highly concentrated. Essential oils should never be used in the eyes, ears and noses. In case of an adverse reaction, use your olive oil or another oil to calm – never water.

Some Suggestions for Cooking With Essential Oils:

  • Salad dressings or salad oils: Lemon, lavender, rosemary, clove or peppermint.
  • Meat and sauces: Basil, marjoram, oregano, or thyme.
  • Desserts: Lemon, clove, orange, tangerine, or peppermint.
  • Herbal teas: Lavender, Roman chamomile, orange, tangerine, lemon, peppermint and melissa.
  • Refreshing drinks: Lemon, orange, tangerine, or peppermint added to cold sparking or still water.
  • Flavoured honey: Cinnamon, clove, lavender, basil, chamomile or lemon. (Warm honey until it becomes a thin liquid; then add the oil.). Honey & lemon is great for winter colds.
  • Everything Italian: Oregano, marjoram, thyme or basil to tomato sauces for pizza or pasta dishes.
  • Everything Asian: Try a drop of lemongrass, cilantro, coriander or ginger  to enhance your Thai curry, soup or stir fry.
  • Everything Chocolate: Use peppermint oil for a choc mint or orange oil for Jaffa.

Yesterday I used the Peppermint essential oil in a chocolate recipe – the flavour is so much smoother than using peppermint essence.     I’ve often wondered about essential oils in cooking (and in things like toothpaste). I was told recently at the local health store that all 100% pure oils are ingestible, despite saying not for internal consumption (“They have to say that.”) It’s a bit of a minefield.

    • Yes, I’d be making very sure before ingesting an essential oil as they are just so potent- i.e.; written confirmation that it’s ok to do so from the company or as Kerry says “Only ever use CPTG® grade oils in food, that are clearly marked on the bottle as a being a dietary supplement. Not all essential oils are created equal and most on the market are simply not safe to take internally.” I don’t think I’d take the word of a health strode personally.
