Fruit whip – with a little hidden goodness

A healthy after school or weekend snack for kids and adults alike…this filling, delicious fruit whip is just the thing.  Just don’t tell them about the secret creamy ingredient – avocado!  The first time my daughter saw me put the avocado in the Thermomix,  she went into protest mode.  She had no where to go though when I told her that it was the way I had made it for many years now!  She had to get over it because she loves it!  But to begin with, you may want to distract your kids when the avocado goes in!

What’s so good about it?
Avocado is a fibre rich source of potassium and healthy monounsaturated fat (amongst many other things).  It’s anti-inflammatory and supports heart, brain and eye health.  There’s more potassium and plant given goodness from the banana and anti-oxidant rich berries.  The natural yogurt is important for digestive health.  For more on the health benefits of yogurt and my favourite brands, click here.

Serves 2

1 medium – large avocado, flesh removed
1 large banana (or two small)
1/2-1 cup of frozen raspberries, blueberries or mixed berries
6-7 tablespoons of natural or Greek, full fat yogurt
1 tablespoon of rice malt syrup or honey (optional)
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, paste or powder


  1. Throw it all in a blender or processor and blend until smooth and creamy (thermomix 30 seconds, speed 6)
  2. Serve it in a cup with a spoon.  You can add a little milk, coconut or almond milk if it is too thick or to turn this into a smoothie.

Trust me, they will NEVER know!

Protein boost
Add 2 tablespoons of almond meal or LSA to the mix.

Add some green
A few baby spinach leaves will increase the nutrition (but may make the colour a little unappealing). Your call.

Replace the yogurt with coconut yogurt or coconut cream.

Freeze it into popsicle moulds for a super healthy frozen treat.

Frozen yogurt cups
This is great for the the lunch box.  Freeze in little cups and by morning tea time it will be soft enough to eat.  Remember to pack a spoon.

Fill a food pouch
Also a great food pouch filler (no spoon required).  I love Little Mashies re-usable food pouches to pack along with the lunch box for a healthy snack.

    Yum! I give this to my kids as a smoothie, in the car, as breakfast on my early work morning. I soak oats overnight then add them as well as a bit more sustenance since they are having it for an early breaky before school. I also add a couple of spoons of seed/nut mix & they like the bit of crunch that gives to it. Love the avocado, it makes it more creamy.
    I also tried the Meredith Dairy sheeps milk yoghurt after reading your post & I am in love! I prefer that now to the Barambah one, so thank you x

    • Great breakfast idea, especially with the extra sustenance of oats and nuts/seeds. How good is the Meredith yoghurt? I’m always a little hesitant to post my personal preferences as taste is such an individual thing. Glad you like it Edina. G x

    Yum! Thanks so much for sharing great recipes. I actualy saw this not long ago somewhere else and my kids (and i) love it. i whip it up in the mornings for school snacks to, just add atiny but of lemon juice which helps keep colour. And yes make great icy polsII

    Delicious. Just made it for my kids after school and once they were eating it we played ‘guess the secret ingredient’. My daughter went through every fruit on the fruit bowl and eventually guessed avocado as it was the only thing in the bowl she hadn’t mentioned. They were a little perturbed, but then shrugged and kept on eating. Thanks for this one.

    yum! do the probiotics survive if you freeze it?

    • Kelly, research is sketchy, but it seems the bacteria are slowed down a little but not killed altogether (heat kills them off completely). Having said that, the cultures need to be present and healthy to begin with (as in a good quality yoghurt). So the ‘frozen yogurt’ type ice creams you see in stores probably don’t contain live cultures to begin with (and are mostly loaded with sugar and additives too). That’s why making your own (like the fruit whip) is best G x

    • Yep, great addition Nessa – I do the same for my son, but one of the few things my daughter doesn’t like is chia (she hates anything gelatinous). Ho hum. G x
