There’s a lot of talk right now about “optimising” our bodies. New peptides. Hormone stacks. Biohacks. Promises that we can slow ageing, reverse it, or somehow stay 35 forever if we just pull the right lever.
And I’ve been sitting with this. Because the message underneath it all often sounds like this: ageing is a problem. But I don’t believe that and if you’re you’re wanting perimenopause or menopause support working with your biology… read on!
Ageing Is Not a Failure. It’s Biology.
At 54, I’ll be honest, there are days I look in the mirror and genuinely wonder where my youth went. I think most women have those moments. The quiet, confronting “when did that start drooping?” realisation.
But that doesn’t mean something has gone wrong. Ageing is not malfunction, it is physiology.
Perimenopause. Menopause. Changes in skin. Shifts in body composition. Altered sleep. These are transitions. Not design flaws. Almost like puberty in reverse.
And yet, midlife is increasingly framed as something to manage, control or correct.
Which raises the question:
Are we supporting our biology – or trying to override it?
Optimising Health vs Overriding the System
Let me be very clear. I am not anti-medicine.
Modern medicine is extraordinary. It’s very good at acute intervention. It can save lives, stabilise crises, replace what is truly deficient.
But what it’s less good at is long-term biological harmony.
You see the body is not a machine with single levers you can just pull harder. It’s a complex, rhythmic system. Hormones pulse. Feedback loops adjust. Everything influences everything else.
When we take something the body produces naturally and amplify it outside of its normal rhythm, we shift more than one pathway.
Sometimes that’s appropriate.
Sometimes it genuinely improves quality of life.
And sometimes it can lead to ripple effects we didn’t necessarily plan for.
That’s not fear-based. It’s systems thinking.
As a naturopath, and as a woman in midlife myself, I’m less interested in quick overrides and more interested in understanding the whole picture.
Perimenopause and Menopause: A Transition, Not a Crisis
One of the biggest shifts I see right now is the way perimenopause and menopause are being discussed.
There is valuable awareness growing, which is wonderful. Women deserve better information, better support and better options.
But alongside that, there is also a subtle message that this stage of life is something to fix.
Yes, symptoms matter. Quality of life matters. And for some women, MHT is appropriate and beneficial. For others it is not an option.
But whether you choose MHT, supplements, both or neither, there are still non-negotiables that underpin your health.
Muscle mass.
Metabolic stability.
Blood sugar regulation.
Sleep architecture.
Nervous system resilience.
Nutritional adequacy.
These are not secondary, they are foundational.
No peptide, hormone stack or supplement can compensate for a lack of these basics.
And importantly, they work with your biology rather than against it.
Working With Your Body, Not Fighting It
For me, it comes down to a few simple principles:
Support what the body is already trying to do.
Intervene thoughtfully when the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.
Accept that ageing includes change.
Longevity isn’t about outsmarting nature. It’s about working alongside it.
That doesn’t mean resigning yourself to feeling unwell. It means understanding where intervention is restorative and where it’s simply reactive.
At Well Nourished, my focus has always been on helping women build strong foundations that carry them through every life stage – including perimenopause and menopause.
Because real resilience isn’t built in a lab. It’s built in daily habits.
