Gentle Detox Tea

January 1, 2024 | Drinks & Smoothies

After the festive feasts, letโ€™s ease into the New Year with some simple self-care by way of a nourishing and gently detoxifying cuppa. Introducing my Gentle Detox Tea!

If youโ€™re eager to get back on track and support your immune system, metabolism, and digestive health, this Gentle Detox Tea fits the bill.

I make this delicious and easy herbal remedy with the goodness of Barnes Naturals Apple Cider Vinegar and their Manuka Honey โ€“ two staples in my kitchen!

Added to the herbal tea of your choice this is THE perfect way to start the day, or drink all day! I’m completely hooked. I’ve used many different herbal teas (peppermint, ginger, chamomile, green tea) but my absolute favourite herbal tea base is the Celestial Seasonings Bengal Spice Tea (available at all the major supermarkets) – it’s an incredible blend of cinnamon, ginger, vanilla and more and pairs beautifully with the ACV and manuka.

Health benefits of this Gentle Detox Tea

Hereโ€™s just *some* of the reasons I love Barnes Naturals Certified Organic Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV):

โœ…  ACO certified organic

โœ…  Itโ€™s raw, unrefined and unpasteurised

โœ…  Contains no artificial colours or flavours

โœ… Made with cold-pressed, naturally fermented apples

โœ… Retains the โ€˜Motherโ€™ enzyme for added benefits

โœ… Suitable for vegetarians AND itโ€™s vegan-friendly

Other ways to enjoy ACV besides my Gentle Detox Tea

If you don’t want to make the Detox Tea you can add it into your daily routine via a 15ml shot or dilute in warm water for a morning boost.

Or, add a splash to sparkling water for some zing or use it in recipes, dressings, and marinades for a healthy twist. We even have it over roasted potatoes, it’s so delicious.

What strength of Manuka to choose

For the detox tea, Iโ€™ve paired it with MGO550+ Barnes Manuka Honey for an added layer of immune support. But feel free to choose your preferred strength! ๐Ÿฏ

We keep various strengths on hand at all times in our house for year-round wellness, immune health support, and of course to elevate drinks, desserts, dressings and more with its incredible flavour.

You can find Barnes Naturals Manuka and ACV at Chemist Warehouse, available behind the counter (or as I like to buy it, in bulk and online which is easier and more cost effective!).

Immune Supportive Chai Tea Latte

May 13, 2015 | Drinks & Smoothies

I think it’s wonderful how food memories are formed – I have many but one of my most vivid is for Chai Tea Latte (the fancy ‘cafe’ name) given to India’s national beverage – Masala Chai, or just Chai.

My husband and I spent over 6 months living in our most favourite country (besides Australia of course) and definitely sampled our fair share of Chai. Almost every town we visited claimed ‘the best chai in India’ – though some of the best we had were from the chai wallah pacing the length of the trains (at all hours) with an urn on his head crying ‘chaiiiiyyyy, chaiiiyyyy….’ over and over. It was almost always sold in a small terracotta cup which when done, you threw out of the train window or smashed on the pathway (not a takeaway or foam cup in sight).

Like coffee, there was good and the not so good. Some chai brews wereย SO sweet that my husband called themย ‘hot soft drink’.

The origins of Chai tea is steeped in Indian history and the ancient medicinal philosophy of Ayurveda. So traditionally, each family would have their own recipe based on the constitutions of family members. The blend of spices contains medicinal and healing properties such as relaxing the digestive tract, elevating the metabolism, and increasing waste and toxin excretion.

So on my stove top, far removed from the most fascinating and diverse country I have ever visited, I thought I’d introduce you to my recipe for a delicious, healing chai – and one of my most favourite hot drinks. This is a far cry from a chai tea bag or the flavoured syrups used in coffee shops in Australia – way more delicious and actually healing. It is also something my kids really love and something I believe helps to keep us well through winter.

Why is it healthy?

The spices are all wonderfully supportive to digestion and the respiratory tract so perfect for winter sickness:
Cloves – anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-parasitic, calming and soothing to the gut and lungs
Cinnamon – anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, improves circulation, balances blood-sugar levels
Cardamon –ย anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory,ย anti-microbial, improves circulation,ย calming and soothing to the gut
Ginger – improves circulation,ย anti-inflammatory especially to the gut, respiratory and muscular-skeletal systems
Turmeric – powerfulย anti-oxidant,ย anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial and supports liver function (and, therefore, digestion)
Coconut oil – anti-microbial and offers immune support. It also helps to support the assimilation of the fat-soluble nutrients in the spices.
Vanilla –ย ย anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory

Ingredients

The chai latte is made with a combination of warming spices like cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, and ginger. You can customise it with your favourite tea (black or rooibos), and enhance the flavour with optional coconut oil or ghee for extra creaminess and health benefits. Sweeten with rice malt syrup or raw honey.

How to make Immunity Chai Latte

Simmer your choice of milk, spices, and ginger in a small pot for about 5 minutes. Add the tea bag and let it steep for a few minutes longer before straining the mixture into a cup. Sweeten with rice malt syrup or honey, and stir in optional coconut oil, ghee, or vanilla for an extra boost of flavour and nutrition.

Serving suggestions and how to store

Enjoy your chai tea latte fresh from the pot, garnished with a sprinkle of cinnamon or turmeric if desired. Itโ€™s best served immediately, but if you need to store it, refrigerate the mixture without the tea bag and reheat gently when ready to serve.

Vary this to suit your dietary needs

For a dairy-free version, substitute almond or coconut milk. You can also choose to sweeten the latte with rice malt syrup for a fructose-friendly option, and for those sensitive to caffeine, rooibos tea is a wonderful alternative to black or green tea.

Take a look at the variations (below the main recipe) for suggestions to alter the recipe to suit your specific dietary requirements.

Immune Supportive Chai Tea Latte

This Immune Supportive Chai Tea Latte is the perfect warming drink, packed with spices known for their immune-supportive properties. With the option to use a variety of teas, you can make this soothing blend to your taste, whether you prefer caffeine-free rooibos or traditional black tea.
Prep Time5 minutes mins
Cook Time5 minutes mins
Total Time10 minutes mins
Course: Drinks
Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 250 ml milk (of choice) (1 cup)
  • 2 clove/s
  • ยฝ cinnamon quill
  • 3 cardamom pods -bruised by pressing with a knife or fork handle
  • 2 slice/s ginger root
  • 1 tea bag -fair-trade black, white or green tea or rooibos tea for caffeine-free*
  • ยผ tsp ground turmeric (or a slice of fresh root if you have it, optional but strongly recommended
  • 1 tsp coconut oil -ย or ghee (optional)
  • ยฝ tsp vanilla - powder, extract or essence (optional)
  • 1 tsp rice malt syrup or honey - to taste
  • *Rooibos tea is available from the tea aisle of supermarkets or health food stores. It is what I chose mostly (I'm a bit caffeine sensitive), always my choice for my kids.

Instructions

  • In a small pot, place your milk, cloves, cinnamon stick, cardamom pods and ginger and bring to a very low simmer for 5 minutes. If you are using the fresh root of turmeric, add this now too.
  • Add the tea bag and continue to simmer very gently for a few more minutes.
  • I just use a spoon to hold the solids aside as I pour the delicious liquid into a cup to enjoy.
  • Sweeten to taste and mix in the optional turmeric powder, coconut oil, ghee and vanilla powder.

Notes

Dairy-free and vegan

Substitute the milk for either almond milk (home made is best, otherwise choose a vegetable oil and sugar-free brand). You could also useย a mix of almond milk and coconut milk for a creamier chai.

Fructose-friendly

Sweeten with rice malt syrup.

Coconut-free

Replace the coconut oil with ghee or just leave it out.

Immune Tea – a Simple Remedy to Prevent and Treat Colds and Flu

July 25, 2013 | Drinks & Smoothies

There’s something soothing about a warm cup of tea when you’re feeling run down. But not any old tea will do. With people dropping left right and centre at the moment with cold symptoms, sore throat, flu symptoms, and all manner of dreaded bugs, I thought I’d share this immune boosting tea recipe – a remedy I rely on to keep myself and my family well.

I also personally use this remedy to treat symptoms of upper respiratory infection. I’ve found in my family it really helps relieve symptoms and shorten the duration of cold symptoms (and severity of the infection). This immune tea is my take on the infamous hot lemon and honey drink my mum used to make me as a child, only packing much more of a medicinal punch.

Health benefits of this immune boosting tea recipe

  • The turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral. This, combined with the anti-inflammatory effects of ginger, means that both are wonderful for treating the congestion associated with respiratory infections.
  • Honey has been used for centuries to reduce inflammation, promote healing and reduce infection. But not all honey is created equal. Processed honey has no medicinal qualities. Real, raw honey possesses these properties, with some types of honey more potent than others. Manuka honey is a type of honey which is potently antibiotic and is receiving much attention in the medical community for its medicinal qualities. It or another raw medicinal honey would be your best choice here.
  • Lemon obviously donates a little hit of vitamin C. But it is the zest that impresses the most. Lemon zest is very nutrient dense, an amazing antioxidant and is very anti-bacterial too. It is also very good for stimulating digestion and breaking down mucous. Where ever a recipe calls for lemon juice, always incorporate the zest too.

Ingredients

Youโ€™ll need boiling water, ginger (either tea bags or fresh), turmeric (ground or fresh), raw or manuka honey, and a lemon for both zest and juice. If you want to take it up a notch, you can even add a splash of coconut oil for extra richness.

How to make Immune Tea

Simply pour boiling water over the ginger and turmeric, let it steep for a few minutes, then stir in the lemon juice and zest. Finish it off with honey to taste, and your immune tea is ready to enjoy! Itโ€™s perfect for a cozy night in or to fill up a thermos for sipping throughout the day if your fighting infection.

Serving suggestions and how to store

This tea is best enjoyed warm, either fresh out of the pot or in a thermos to keep it hot. If you have leftovers, you can store it in the fridge and reheat when needed. It also doubles nicely as can be used as a base for iced tea in warmer weather!

Vary this to suit your dietary needs

To make it vegan, swap the honey for maple syrup or rice malt syrup. For a more potent brew, simmer the ginger and turmeric root for a few extra minutes, or add a tablespoon of coconut oil for an extra immune boost.
